What You Really Need To Know About Celebrating Christmas
Again, it is the time of year where it is impossible to forget the very popular festive season called Christmas. We have been seeing a lot of ads on the TVs, in the shops, on the radio and we read about it in magazines and newspapers, but the question is: what is Christmas all about?
To start with, where does the name Christmas come from?
The name Christmas was taken from the Middle English term “Cristis Masse.” In literal translation it means Christ’s Festival. There are also some accounts that translate it as “mass for Christ.”
Christmas is now celebrated by people around the world, whether they are Christians or not. It’s a time when family and friends come together and remember the good things they have. People, and especially children, also like Christmas as it’s a time when you give and receive presents!
Others may have given this festive season different interpretations and looks. To some people, it is a pagan festival, to some, it’s a time to travel and visit loved ones. To some, it’s a time to eat, drink and make merry. Some even go as far as committing sins during this period, in which the results are usually seeing in the following year.
To many children, it’s a time where they look forward to seeing what Santa has left for them in their Christmas stockings and under the Christmas tree.
A brief background story of Santa Claus
Santa Claus (St. Nicholas) was a wealthy man who gave gifts to the poor who were struggling financially but did not let them to know where the gifts had come from, so he gave in such a way that the recipients would receive his gifts without knowing who brought them. Hence, the myth about Father Christmas.
However, for many people nowadays, Christmas has become a time where families worry about the cost of Christmas rather than looking forward to the reason for the season. The temptation to take out loans and goods on credit has become the order the day.
Many young girls want to adorn themselves with the latest make ups in vogue. As a matter of fact, there is this new female hair that is trending now called: “bone straight,” which almost very girl is dying to have at all cost.
Bone straight is made of raw hairs from multiple donors, usually of Peruvian or Cambodian origin. The main reason many women want to have this hair is because it is naturally straight and also long, which is why many women love it. The question is, is that the reason for Christmas? The answer is no.
A lot of people do love to celebrate Christmas, including folks from other religions too. It has become a time for family reunions, parties and celebrations. Nevertheless, the costs involved are still a major factor of the celebrations of celebrating Christmas this way.
In developed countries, people tend to spend a lot of money on decorations, food, drink and spending on travels, which all adds to the cost proving that Christmas is the most expensive time of year for many families.
Despite the negative impact of the current pandemic, many people still managed to travel for this festive season.
Now, here is the big question, why do we celebrate Christmas?
In a very simple and short answer, from Christian perspective, Christmas is all about the birth of Christ Jesus.
Honestly, no one knows the date Jesus Christ was born.
The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336 AD, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. He was the first Christian Roman Emperor. But at that time, it was not yet an official celebration.
Many theories and traditions have pointed at 25th of December to be the birthday of our Lord Jesus, which has been disputed by many scholars and people in general.
Nevertheless, here is a major reason why Christians celebrate Jesus’ birth in December 25th.
Some Bible scholars opined that the day Mary (mother of Jesus) was told that she would be pregnant through the help of the Holy Spirit, was on March 25th which is called the Annunciation. And 9 months after that time was the 25th of December.
So, whether we celebrate Jesus’ birth on March 25th or on 25th of December, the main point is the reason for the season, which is Christ Jesus.
Christmas celebration should always remind us of the Love of God for humanity and He demonstrated this Love by giving us His Son Christ Jesus to die for our sins, offered us forgiveness and reconciled us back to God.
We therefore need to extend this same selfless Love to others. Even if we do not have anything to give, a gentle smile we put on their faces will go a long way in rekindling the Love of God in their lives.
We must always remember; Jesus is the reason for the season. He lives forever in you and in me.
Merry Christmas to you all and have a wonderful and prosperous new year in advance.
Happy Celebration!
