In our today’s episode 505 of studying and understanding the Bible, we shall be looking into Jeremiah Chapters 16 titled:
What Jeremiah Chapter 16 Will Make You Know About Relationships
Remember from our previous chapters how Prophet Jeremiah has been worried and lamenting about how rebellious and disobedient his people were and how he has at many times pleaded with God on their behalf for God to forgive them and restore them. Unfortunately, those he was praying for were not even showing concerns. It was like a waste of time praying for them, but then, he did not give up. He kept on praying to God and at the same time addressing them about the need for them to repent (have a change of mind).
In the period in-between, having considered the evils that was about to befall his people because of their evil actions, God prohibited Jeremiah from getting married or setting up a family. He was also instructed not to share in either joy or sorrow of his neighbours. In a nutshell, he was to become celibate. You will see all these in verses 1-9
Why would God prohibit Jeremiah from mingling with people at that time?
The reason is simply because God did not want him to be corrupted or produce another corrupted generation. Because the sins of these people had already reached an unbearable threshold and they were already awaiting judgement. So, whatever happened to them was brought upon them by their sins and rejection of solution to their sin’s problem. Read more in verses 10-13.
If we are to interpret this using the lens of the epistles, we will see something similar here in 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 (TPT)
14 Don’t continue to team up with unbelievers in mismatched alliances, for what partnership is there between righteousness and rebellion? Who could mingle light with darkness?
15 What harmony can there be between Christ and Satan? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?
16 What friendship does God’s temple have with demons? For indeed, we are the temple of the living God, just as God has said: I will make my home in them and walk among them.
I will be their God, and they will be my people.17 For this reason, “Come out from among them and be separate,” says the Lord. “Touch nothing that is unclean, and I will embrace you.
18 I will be a true Father to you, and you will be my beloved sons and daughters,” says the Lord Yahweh Almighty.
Does this mean we should not associate with people, including unbelievers?
No, that’s not what the place is teaching.
Apostle Paul was teaching that in our marital, business, and personal relationships, we must be careful not to involve ourselves in anything that will divide or pollute our loyalty to God in Christ Jesus. Of course, we must never abandon our responsibility to reach the world as stated in 1Cor 5:9-10 (TPT).
9 I wrote you in my previous letter asking you not to associate with those who practice sexual immorality.
10 Yet in no way was I referring to avoiding contact with unbelievers who are immoral, or greedy, or swindlers, or those who worship other gods—for that would mean you’d have to isolate yourself from the world entirely!
Nevertheless, because of Jeremiah’s prayers with respect to God’s original plan to save humanity, a future restoration was promised by God, where God would bring them back to their own country after they might have spent many years in captivity they caused themselves. So, they were advised to endure their avoidable captivity experience until the restoration happens. You will read about all these in verses 14 -18.
And lastly in this chapter, Jeremiah also prophesied about the Gospel spreading to the Gentile nations. Remember we also saw this in various prophecies from Isaiah. Because God wanted every generation to know about it, that is why He keeps revealing Himself and His Salvation plan to many people.
Let’s read what Jeremiah says concerning this in Jeremiah 16:19-21 (GNT)
19 Lord, you are the one who protects me and gives me strength; you help me in times of trouble. Nations will come to you from the ends of the earth and say, “Our ancestors had nothing but false gods, nothing but useless idols.
20 Can people make their own gods? No, if they did, those would not really be gods.”
21 “So then,” says the Lord, “once and for all I will make the nations know my power and my might; they will know that I am the Lord.”
The conversion of the Gentile nations was as a matter of fact part of God’s Salvation plan for the entire human race. So, the same way God revealed this prophecy to Isaiah, He also revealed it to Jeremiah, and He kept on revealing same message to many other prophets in the Bible until Christ eventually came to fulfil what has been spoken about Him.
Jesus said it Himself in Luke 24:44-47 (TPT)
44 Then he said to them, “Don’t you remember the words that I spoke to you when I was still with you? I told you that everything written about me would be fulfilled, including all the prophecies from the law of Moses through the Psalms and the writings of the prophets—that they would all find their fulfillment.”
45 He supernaturally unlocked their understanding to receive the revelation of the Scriptures,
46 then said to them, “Everything that has happened fulfills what was prophesied of me. Christ, the Messiah, was destined to suffer and rise from the dead on the third day.
47 Now you must go into all the nations and preach repentance and forgiveness of sins so that they will turn to me. Start right here in Jerusalem.
To be continued…stay tuned and stay blessed.
Let us pray:
- I declare, God will supernaturally unlock your understanding to receive the revelation knowledge of the Word of God, in Jesus name.
- By the power of the Word of God, begin to overcome every form of ungodly worry, fear, anxiety, heaviness of the spirit, sorrow, depression, lust of the flesh and whatever the devil might have programmed to pollute your mind, you overcome them all, in Jesus name.
- Evil shall not befall you; tyranny shall be far away from you and your family; oppression will not know your address; you are liberated from poverty mentality; you are liberated from any form of ignorance. Continue to operate in the wisdom of God, all the days of your life, in Jesus name.
