In our today’s episode 527 of studying and understanding the Bible series, we shall be examining Jeremiah Chapter 37 titled:
Very Funny! The King Wanted Prophecies and Prayers From Jeremiah
This chapter gives us the account of Zedekiah succeeding Coniah as king of Judah. Coniah is also known as Jehoiachin, the son of Jehoiakim.
Jehoiachin was supposed to rule after his father but he only spent 3 months on the throne because Nebuchadnezzar took him captive to Babylon and made his uncle (Zedekiah) a vassal king in his place. A vassal king can also be referred to as a puppet king. So that through him, Babylonian king will be able to control what happens in Judah. Read more in 2Kings 24:17 and 2Chro 36:10
It’s still happening till date. Most national leaders we see today are mere vassal. Most of them answer to some higher authorities. Well, that’s not our focus for today.
The Bible says Zedekiah did what was terrible in God’s sight. You will see this in verses 1 and 2.
In verse 2, he was not ready to obey the Lord’s command but in verse 3, he sent people to Jeremiah to go and ask him for prophecies and prayers. Funny right?
As funny and ridiculous as it sounds, that’s the situation of many people today, especially those running from one church to another looking for miracles. Their hearts are never aligned with God. Rather, they are seeking God for what they could get from Him.
Remember those people looking for Jesus because of food? That’s exactly the point.
So, Jeremiah told the King the truth: Judah will be invaded and the temple burnt down. Since they have refused to listen to God and obey Him. Read verses 6-10.
The rest of the chapter deals with the arrest of Jeremiah when he was trying to move to his property and they accused him of trying to run away. Verses 11-15 gives account of what happened, please read it.
Thereafter, the king sought for him and in their conversation, Jeremiah quickly begged the king not to allow the soldiers return him to the prison, otherwise, he could die, because of how terrible the place was.
The king agreed and allowed him to be detained in the palace prison which is far better in that he would be able to see visitors and have access to free food. Verses 16-21 gives more details.
When the king asked him again about the fate of Judah and the kingdom, Jeremiah didn’t say because the king did him a little favour that he was going to change the prophecy. No, he insisted on the what God has revealed to him.
Because the people were not ready to obey God and do His Will, that’s why they are facing the calamity that was be falling them from the Babylonians.
Lessons To Learn
We must maintain our stand as Christians or Believers, even in the face of trials.
We must not twist the Word of God because of some little favours.
God knows how to rescue his people from dangers even if it seems no one is left to defend us. One with God is always a majority.
To be continued…stay tuned and stay blessed.
