STUDYING AND UNDERSTANDING THE BIBLE – PART 448
Isaiah Chapter 53
We learnt yesterday about how the Arm of the Lord signifies God’s Power, Strength and Might to save mankind through Christ (The Messiah).
Unfortunately, the Jews couldn’t relate with the mode of appearance of the Messiah since He came in a humble form.
To them, He appeared weak and tender and couldn’t take over political power and handover to them.
Jesus on the other hand knew why He came. He didn’t come to be dragging earthly power with humans. He came to hand over Kingdom Power to as many as possible that would believe and receive the Gospel.
Now, let’s continue with Isaiah’s Prophetic description of the Messiah in Isaiah 53:2-5
[2]For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
Note that Isaiah has always described the Messiah using the “tender plant” or “tender branch” metaphors sprouting from the stem of Jesse (read Isaiah 11:1). We have learnt these in our previous studies. One of them is Isaiah 11:1 (please read).
So, verse 2 above is a very humble statement describing the humble Messiah. He didn’t come born in a mansion, dressed up in an intimidating manner or riding on the latest mode of transportation to brag or to display opulence.
Rather, he came without any form of comeliness.
A root in the dry ground specified in the prophecy is about how Jesus was born from a womb that has never been used before – a virgin womb.
Let’s continue…
[3]He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Jesus confirmed this prophecy of rejection in Luke 4:24.
Luke 4:24
[24]And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country. This is what Isaiah used to open this Chapter. He already anticipated the rejection that the Messiah would face. He saw it ahead of time. That’s why he said…
Isaiah 53:1
[1]Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?
Let’s take two more verses from our study chapter…
[4]Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
[5]But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
The above prophecies were fulfilled in the Gospels. Let’s look at how Matthew wrote it down…
Matthew 8:16-17
[16]When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:
[17]That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.
Another way He fulfilled the above prophecies is that the Messiah paid the price for the sins of humanity once and for all and ask everyone to come and receive forgiveness of the Father, so we can all be reconciled to Him.
To be continued…Praise God.
