In our today’s episode 533 of studying and understanding the Bible, we shall be examining Jeremiah Chapter 43 titled:
The Feedback From GOD Did Not Go Down Well With The People.
Let’s remember from Chapter 42 that the remaining soldiers, princes and other people left in Judah after Babylonian’s invasion had through their leaders appealed to Jeremiah to help them consult with God in order to know what to do next, whether to proceed to Egypt or remain in Judah.
In verses 5 and 6 of Chapter 42, they even vowed that whatever God revealed is what they would follow whether it aligned with their own plan or not.
But getting to Chapter 43, especially verse 4, the story changed. They rejected the feedback that Prophet Jeremiah brought from God.
They already had it in mind to move to egypt in the fear that if Nebuchadnezzar’s forces should come to Judah again and find out that Gedaliah (the new Governor he installed has been killed and that his cabinet has been dissolved, Nebu would not find it funny and would deal with them mercilessly. So that was the major reason they planned to escape to Egypt with the people.
Now, the question is when they already knew and planned to migrate to Egypt, why bothering Jeremiah to pray to hear from God to the point that they promised to obey whatever the feed back might be.
Jeremiah even spent ten days on this matter in prayer.
In verse 4, they changed the narrative and discredited Jeremiah’s message again and called him a false Prophet.
Will these people ever learn at all? The man that prophesied Babylonian’s invasion and advised on what to do and what he said came to pass, when other false prophets were giving false hopes. Why would he lead them astray on this one?
Long story short, they disobeyed again and forcefully moved all the people including Jeremiah down to Egypt.
In the remaining verses 8 to 13, Jeremiah prophesied again using stone and clay as symbols of Babylonian invasion on Egypt, which was the major reason he instructed the people against moving to Egypt in the first place.
During the invasion, he foresaw that many people would die in the battle, some would be killed by famine and many more would die from diseases. Seeing all these was the reason he strongly warned against their decision.
If they had remained in Judah, even if Babylonian should make another attempt to come and scoop the remaining people, they would be spared. You will find this promise in verses 11 and 12 of chapter 42.
Lessons To Learn
We must never go against God’s instructions, especially when He is leading us on a particular journey in life. Disobedience always leads to irreparable disasters.
We must learn to hear from God before taking any decision. If a genuine man of God advises you, don’t trash his advise or prophecies. However, you can pray about it and if truly it was God that sent him or her, you will receive a confirmation from God. Remember the story of Apostle Peter and Cornelius in Acts Chapter 10?
If you want God to speak to you always, then spend more time in studying His Word, praying and worshipping. Remember, Jeremiah spent ten days praying before getting back to the people.
