INTRODUCTION: Although from the opening of the book of Proverbs, it appears as if Solomon was the only Author of the book. He was not the only author.
There were other authors: two of them were specifically mentioned as Agur and Lemuel and others were called “Wise Men.”
And these wise men passed on the proverbs to their subsequent generations through oral traditions that existed even before Solomon’s time and then also, some proverbs were added after Solomon’s time. For example, Chapters 25–29 were added in the days of King Hezekiah of Judah (Read Proverbs 25:1).
And then, all of these materials were compiled which formed the Book of Proverbs that we read today.
Proverbs Chapter 1
Verses 1-6 gives us the purpose of the compiled proverbs. Kindly read for more details.
Verses 7 – 9 gives an exhortation to fear God, and believe his Word, because of the benefit to be derived from it.
And verses 10-19 instruct us to avoid the company of the wicked men, who involve themselves in wretchedness and ruin.
In verses 20-23, we see Wisdom personified, she cries in the streets, and complains of the contempt with which she is treated.
Verses 24 – 33 is about the dreadful punishment that awaits all those who refuse her counsels.
To be continued…
