Isaiah Chapter 42
Isaiah 42:1
[1]Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.
This Chapter is actually talking about the Messiah (Jesus Christ).
How did we know?
Because Jesus Himself said it and quoted Prophet Isaiah in Matthew 12:17-21 KJV
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, [18] Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.
[19] He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.
[20] A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.
[21] And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.
Also, we will see another confirmation of this statement from God, when He spoke during the meeting that took place on the Mount of transfiguration. Please, read Matthew 17:5-6.
Digging deeper into the Epistles, we will also find another confirmation as written by Apostle Paul to the Philippians…
Philippians 2:7-8 KJV
But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
[8] And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Now that we have established that the Servant mentioned in Chapter 42, is Christ, what then are His characteristics combined with the assignment He came to fulfil?
👉The Spirit of God is upon Him. Read verse 1 again and also see where Jesus mentioned it Himself in Luke 4:18-19
[18].
👉Another feature of His assignment is about bringing judgement. Meaning that Christ brought justice to the nations even to the Gentiles.
👉One other feature He possesses is in verse 2 He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.
Does this mean He won’t talk? Not at all.
Isaiah simply means that He would be gentle and will not quarrel with others in public. He will not exalt his own voice.
👉Let’s look at one more feature of Him in verse 3.
Isaiah 42:3
[3]A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.
What is this bruised reed that the Messiah would not break?
The Hebrew transliteration for “bruised” is called (râtsats), which is pronounced as /raw-tsats/
And it means when you crush, discourage or oppress someone.
A reed on the other hand is a metaphor for the feebleness of humanity.
There are so many people who have been crushed, oppressed and discouraged by circumstances of life, by sin and also by the devil himself.
Prophet Isaiah says, the Messiah would not come to add to their burden (just like the Pharisees were doing in their time). But Jesus came to set them free.
Hence, the reason for the mission statement of Jesus in Luke 4:18
[18]The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
So, Jesus didn’t come to crush the broken hearted. He didn’t come to add to the burden of the weak and vulnerable.
Instead, He came to rescue them and also ensures justice comes to those who are wronged.
👉In verse 4, Isaiah says His inner being will not become faint or discouraged, nor will His light grow dim before he establishes justice on the earth. Even the distant lands beyond the seas (Gentiles) will hunger for his instruction.”
That’s amazing…
To be continued…Praise God.
