STUDYING AND UNDERSTANDING THE BIBLE – PART 450

Isaiah Chapter 54

Isaiah 54:1-4 TPT
“Rejoice with singing, you barren one! You who have never given birth, burst into a song of joy and shout, you who have never been in labor! For the deserted wife will have more children than the married one,” says Yahweh.

To us as human beings, it’s usually very difficult to rejoice when facing challenges. Especially when dealing with all the shames associated with being barren. It’s not easy at all. It causes loneliness, depression and various other negative factors.

But then, Isaiah is seen here saying “rejoice.”

Why? Because the message is coming from God. Assuming it’s coming from man, we would have concluded, such words may fail.

However, whenever God says He would do a thing, rest assured it’s a settled case already.

But let me quickly tell us what Prophet Isaiah was actually talking about in this chapter.

The barrenness mentioned here is spiritual. He only used natural barrenness to describe the spiritual state of the Jews at time when they were in Captivity.

How did I know this?

Paul in one of his Epistles said it. Let’s read…

Galatians 4:26-28 TPT
In contrast, there is a heavenly Jerusalem above us, which is our true “mother.” She is the freewoman, birthing children into freedom!

Talking about spiritual freedom in Christ Jesus.

[27] For it is written: “Burst forth with gladness, O barren woman with no children! Break through with the shouts of joy and jubilee, for you are about to give birth! The one who was once considered desolate and barren now has more children than the one who has a husband!”

You can see Paul quoted Isaiah in the above verse…and also made reference to Isaac in the following verse below.

[28] Dear friends, just like Isaac, we’re now the true children who inherit the kingdom promises.

Isaac was used to represent us. We were sentenced to die but God provided a lamb/ram (Christ) who took our death so we could walk freely (spiritual freedom).

You can now all see what Isaiah meant in his prophecies.

Let me break it down…

Israel was taken into captivity due to their disobedience. Their lives became barren spiritually.

God brought the Good News of Salvation and restoration to them for them to be repatriated to Jerusalem (a figurative representation of Spiritual Jerusalem – God’s Kingdom).

But at this time, it’s no longer only the Jews that would be part of that family. The whole world was already included. That’s why Isaiah’s prophecies were addressed to both the Jews and the distant lands (Gentiles).

Remember in our previous studies, they claimed God divorced them but God says no He didn’t. It was the other way round.

But then, they have now been remarried back to God and Isaiah is here giving them the promise of producing spiritual children all over the world.

That’s why Isaiah further says in verse 54:2

[2] “Increase is coming, so enlarge your tent and add extensions to your dwelling. Hold nothing back! Make the tent ropes longer and the pegs stronger.

[3] You will increase and spread out in every direction. Your sons and daughters will conquer nations and revitalize desolate cities.

[4] Do not fear, for your shame is no more. Do not be embarrassed, for you will not be disgraced. You will forget the inadequacy you felt in your youth and will no longer remember the shame of your widowhood.

God has been consistent with this statement right from the beginning with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, making them Fathers of many nations.

A time is coming, the Gospel will spread across the world and people will know God intimately. God will then have many spiritual children.

Prophet Habakkuk also saw this and he says in Habakkuk 2:14
[14]For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.

To be continued…Praise God.
