In our today’s episode 517 of studying and understanding the Bible, we shall be examining Jeremiah Chapter 27 titled:
Human Being Wears Animal’s Yoke To Preach To The People
Before we proceed, let me quickly make some clarifications about this Chapter 27.
If you notice in verse 1 using KJV version, Jehoiakim was referred to as being on the throne at that time.
However, looking at the time of event and comparing other manuscripts, we will discover that the king on the throne at that time was Zedekiah and not Jehoiakim. It was an error made by some translators and scribes copying from the original Hebrew texts to english texts.
Well, we must appreciate the effort of many genuine scribes who have helped to effect these translations from the original text into the english translations we have today. They did a very good job.
Now back to our subject matter.
In our previous studies, we have been able to appreciate the use of visual illustrations in conveying messages to people – a strategy mostly adopted in schools for students to have a firm knowledge of their various subjects.
In the same way, many old testament prophets are fond of using this method as it has proven to be one of the most effective ways of communicating with people if you want them to retain what you are teaching them in their memory.
So, here in Chapter 27, Prophet Jeremiah had been instructed to make a yoke out of leather straps and wooden crossbars and to put it on his neck.
What’s the motive behind this?
Let’s look at a quick background to the message behind the wooden yoke.
It’s clear from this Chapter that representatives of the kings from various kingdoms who do not like the subjugation of king nebuchadnezzar plotted to form a synergy and revolt against Babylon in order to break his yoke of subjugation off their necks.
Some of the kingdoms mentioned were: Edom, Moab, the Ammonites, Tyre, and Sidon.
They came to discuss with King Zedekiah of Judah to plan a rebellion against Nebuchadnezzar.
Jeremiah, having received in form of prophecy the danger involved in their plan, quickly swung into action to warn them as usual, but this time with some practical demonstrations.
According to Jeremiah’s prophecy, it’s safer to surrender to Babylon than fighting against him, which is the true meaning of the yoke on his neck.
As expected, they didn’t listen. Rather, it was a prophet colleague (Hananiah) that broke the yoke off Jeremiah’s neck. This is found in the next chapter. 28:10
You can see it’s a power tussle between two men of God.
Lesson learnt:
Prophet Hananiah appeared to be a senior prophet to Jeremiah and that’s why he was trying to silence him using his position.
The truth is, when it comes to prophetic matters, age is not a barrier, which God Himself already made clear to Jeremiah in chapter 1 and he has been instructed not to be afraid of them because they would definitely come after him, which we have seen repeatedly in many chapters.
In today’s dispensation, don’t be carried away by position, money or the connection a person has to call him a genuine man of God. Rather, let the Holy Spirit and the Word of God be your guide always.
That someone is a church leader does not mean he can’t make mistake interpreting the Bible. Don’t be loyal to errors from these con men. Rather, be loyal to God and His rightly divided Word.
Jeremiah was not afraid of them despite the fact that he was young. He was consistent with the truth always.
So, stay with the truth always in any endeavour you find yourself.
To be continued…stay tuned and stay blessed.
Let us pray:
I declare the grace to stick with the truth in all you do, receive it in Jesus name.
