STUDYING AND UNDERSTANDING THE BIBLE – PART 474
Isaiah Chapter 66
Isaiah 66:1-2 TPT
This is what Yahweh says: “The heavens are my throne and the earth is my footstool. Where is the house you will build for me? Where is the place where I will rest?
[2] My hand made these things so they all belong to me,” declares Yahweh. “But there is one my eyes are drawn to: the humble one, the tender one, the trembling one who lives in awe of all I say.
Did you know that up till now, we still have many believers who think that God is sitting on a chair-like throne somewhere in the sky or firmament?
The truth is, our heavenly Father is a Spirit Being and is too great to be limited to a couch-like throne. The heavens and earth are matters and God cannot be limited by matter, space and time.
Isaiah and some other Old Testament writers only used that to symbolize the sovereignty and authority of God over everything in the heavenly realm and the earth realm.
And again, let me quickly clarify this:
You see all the gigantic buildings and structures we build here and there all over the world, God does not live in any of them.
God lives in you and I. God lives inside every believer through His Holy Spirit the moment they get born again and when believers (both Pastors and congregations) come together to meet anywhere either under a building or under a tree or even online, they bring the presence of God to that place. You are the carrier and not the location per se.
Location does not bring the presence of God. Rather, it’s you that carries the presence of God to locations including church buildings or your living room.
That’s why Jesus Himself says in Matthew 18:20
[20]For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
For more explanations, let’s read what Apostle Paul has to say…
Acts 17:24-25
[24]God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
[25]Neither is worshipped with men’s hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
The same way that God does not dwell in any material throne in the physical heavens we are looking at, is the same way He does not dwell in the material temple we build here and there on earth.
That’s exactly what Prophet Isaiah was trying to explain to those Jews returning from exile when the prophecy about their repatriation has been fulfilled.
They were actually trying to rebuild the ruined temple in order to give it all of the inward and outward adornment just like it was before the invasion and ruin. They were doing this without a changed heart. They were still living in sin. They were still rebellious against God in their heart.
That’s why Isaiah rebukes them and says…
“But there is one my eyes are drawn to: the humble one, the tender one, the trembling one who lives in awe of all I say.”
Now pay attention to that verse 2 very well. God shifted their attention from the physical temple to their own hearts.
The heart…is what matters to God.
If you claim to be born again and your heart is far from God or your heart has not been renewed, then you are a false believer. Those are the kinds of people Apostle John was talking about here…
1 John 2:19
[19]They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
Let’s sum it up…
👉God does not dwell in material things, because He is not a material God. He is a Spirit Being and dwells in the heart of every believer spiritually. We connect with Him in the spirit, which is the Truth.
👉The throne mentioned by Isaiah is a symbol of God’s sovereignty and authority over everything both in the heavenly realm and earth realm and not a physical chair-like throne.
👉As a believer, you are the temple of God and He wants to live there for ever. You are a kind of Christ on earth.
When you have this deep understanding and believe it, you will always live victoriously over every circumstance and situation here on earth.
