STUDYING AND UNDERSTANDING THE BIBLE – PART 469
Isaiah Chapter 63 continued
Isaiah 63:4
[4]For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come.
The above is one of the verses some people ignorantly use to pray against their neighbours tagged their enemies. This is really a myopic and ignorant perspective.
The reason is because, Isaiah never wrote that verse as a formula to unleash “enemy must die” prayers on your fellow human beings.
The vengeance mentioned there was meant for the last day, which is a metaphor for God’s judgement against the devil, his demons and those who reject God’s offer of Salvation.
The Bible never instructed New Covenant believers to pray for vengeance or to ask evil to befall their “enemies.”
First of all, your enemy is not your neighbour or colleague at work or your boss. Your real enemy is the devil and has been working behind the scene right from the beginning of the world to foment troubles.
It’s pathetic to note that the devil has really mastered one evil act from the beginning: anytime he did evil, he brainwashed people to believe it was God’s hand in it.
The same thing he is doing nowadays. He torments trouble and paints a picture of your neighbour or family member and you start suspecting them.
Even if he uses your family member to fight against you, if you really know who you are in Christ, no evil can befall you. All you need do is watch and pray. Apply God’s wisdom and take precautions.
God never instructed us to pray that the devil should die. The devil is a spirit, an evil one for that matter. So he can’t die. It’s not scriptural. God is the one who is going to handle devil’s punishment and he has already been sentenced to eternal damnation.
Back to human enemies, lets read what the Epistle has to say about how we should handle them…
Romans 12:19-21
[19]Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
[20]Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.
[21]Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
The coal of fire mentioned above does not mean you will get hot coals of fire from black smith or from a local bakery. It’s just a figure of speech used by Paul.
Let’s get a clearer picture from a another translation.
Romans 12:19-21 TPT
Beloved, don’t be obsessed with taking revenge, but leave that to God’s righteous justice. For the Scriptures say: “If you don’t take justice in your own hands, I will release justice for you,” says the Lord.
[20] And: If your enemy is hungry, buy him lunch! Win him over with kindness. For your surprising generosity will awaken his conscience, and God will reward you with favor.
[21] Never let evil defeat you, but defeat evil with good.
It means that by demonstrating kindness to that person that offended you, his or her heart will be touched and also feel ashamed for hurting you in the first place.
With that act, you will be able to win him over to God.
Remember that God’s desire is for all men to be saved not to be destroyed. 1Tim 2:1-4
If God should be killing people for their shortcomings, no one will remain on earth.
What about that little lie you told your husband or wife or siblings or your church members and they saw you as a saint?
What about the time you resumed late to the office and you wrote 8am instead of 9am? What about when you broke traffic lights law for whatever reason? What about the time you discussed your fellow human being behind his/her back in a negative way?
What about that project you were asked to carry out and you used substandard materials, which led to the death of many lives?
And someone offended you and you are asking heaven to fall? It seems you don’t know what Spirit you are made of. Please ask Jesus Christ Himself in Luke 9:54-56
Have you been offended by someone and you are heart broken?
Honestly, I understand your situation and I can feel it, because I have been there before. I have experienced it several times from many people – terrible things that mouth cannot describe. So, I know what it means to be hurt and heartbroken.
Just like I did by following God’s instruction, you need to let go and forgive. When you do this, you will discover that your mind will be at peace and you will be able to focus on important matters of your life. Remember God forgave you your own sins too and then gives you the capacity to forgive others as well. Make use of that grace now and prove that in deed Christ lives in your heart. You are His express image.
If possible, buy him or her lunch (as instructed by Apostle Paul). Send season’s greetings to him/her. Give a surprise call or text, email etc show some love and you will see how your life will be filled with peace and more of God’s grace and favour.
To be continued…Praise God.
