The Role of a Prophet

Good day Saints in Christ Jesus and welcome to another new day. Glory to God for the gift of life.

Part 482 of our series of studying and understanding the Bible.

Still under Chapter 1 of the Book of Jeremiah and before we dive deep into the signs showing whether you are a prophet or not, let’s pay attention to the followings:

Being a Prophet does not necessarily mean foretelling or predicting future events. In fact, that’s not the major role of a Prophet.

Whether you were born a Prophet, called to be one or you served as a son under another Prophet and you were imparted to function in the prophetic, no matter the category, your primary role is not to be looking for “who is doing who” or “show me my future wife” or “who will be the next president.”

The primary role of a prophet and any of the other ministry offices is to rightly preach and teach the Word of God to draw men to God for Salvation and to mature them in the faith (discipleship).

Let’s see how Apostle Paul puts it here…

Ephesians 4:11-15
[11]And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

[12]For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

[13]Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

[14]That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

[15]But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

If all you can do is see into the future and nothing more, then you are merely operating with the gift of prophecy and not in the office, because there is a difference between the two.

That’s why a prophet must not give prophecies anyhow. Only say what God shows you and instruct you to say. It takes discipline to not divulge all you see.

It’s so sad to discover that what some people care about nowadays are prophecies for gains or materialism – who to marry, what business to do, who is that witch in my family or neighbourhood etc…

They don’t care about the kingdom of God, proper Bible studies and prayers for spiritual growth, they don’t care about knowing God more, and how to function in their God-given gifts. All they run after is how to get miracle money, jobs, wife, husband, babies, political positions etc…all these are important too but have no eternal benefits. They are ephemeral. You don’t even need prophecy to build a business or make money. What you need is training on financial principles.

And because of the level of desperation we have nowadays, many have been manipulated and brainwashed. Many homes have been scattered. The pressure is just too much at this end time.

In places where Prophets predicted future events in the Bible (Isaiah, Jeremiah etc), they did that under strict instructions from God.

Abraham was a Prophet. He operated in the prophetic office. In fact, God Himself called him a Prophet (Gen 20:7). But then, no where did we see him running around looking for who bewitched who or doing miracle money crusades. Rather, the Bible calls him – FATHER OF FAITH.

It is in the process of rightly diving the Word of God to draw people more to God and mature them that God will also be showing you some specific and direct messages about their life.

We can see a typical example in the conversation that ensued between Jesus and the Samaritan woman (John 4:7-30). You will notice that it was when they were already in the middle of the Word of God shared by Jesus that the prophecy of husband/marital life came up.

When Jesus noticed the woman was ready to know more, then prophecy automatically came up. Read John 4:15. This essentially means that prophecy was not the focus, but the Word of God that draws men unto Salvation. This is evident in the result it produced thereafter – many more people got saved through the Samaritan woman.

No wonder Apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians 2:2

[2]For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

God is raising new generation of Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors and Teachers, whose primary eagerness is to prophesy Christ to people for their Salvation, which gives eternal life.
